FoPV at the Awards

Over the years the FoPV and its members have found themselves nominated for, and winning, various awards.

2013

  • English Heritage Angel Awards
    Shepherd Wheel nominated for Heritage Rescue.

2012

  • Sheffield Telegraph Environment Awards 2012
    WINNER in the Individual category for Ros Hancock in recognition of all her work for the Friends of the Porter Valley

  • English Heritage Angel Awards:
    Certificate of commendation to Friends of the Porter Valley for their work to rescue Shepherd Wheel

2011

  • Sheffield Telegraph Environment Awards 2011
    WINNER in the Community category for Friends of the Porter Valley


Other Achievements & Activities

  • Research, report writing and publication.

  • Organised monthly walks; quarterly talks etc.

  • Raised profile through liaising with;

    • Other Friends/interest groups,

    • Sheffield City Council officers and councillors,

    • youth groups etc.

     

  • Fund raising for Shepherd Wheel and Forge Dam restorations.

  • Created community events e.g.

    • Duck Race,

    • Autumn and Winter Fairs,

    • participated in Sharrow Vale street markets.

     

  • Created twice-monthly conservation group, working with council staff to do

    • woodland maintenance,

    • tree/bulb/wild flower planting,

    • river/goit clearance in the valleys,

    • built and repaired paths, steps, and benches.

     

  • Endcliffe Park:

    • Creation of adult gym,

    • Aided setting up of Parkour equipment and,

    • re-development of children's playground.

     

  • Shepherd Wheel: Achieved the restoration of Shepherd Wheel to working order in conjunction with other stakeholders. Now open to the public at weekends and Bank Holidays; admission free.

  • Wire Mill Dam: Encouraged and helped Sheffield City Council to repair leaks and reconstruct the head goit.

  • Forge Dam:

    • supported café re-development,

    • improvement of toilets,

    • clearance and maintenance of area as part of the overall restoration of the immediate area.

     

  • Restoration of (re-named) Oliver's Bridge.

  • Enhancement of Common Lane open space as an urban nature park.
