About the event
Investigate the geology of the valley floor from Forge Dam to Shepherd Wheel and return via Highcliffe and the Roughs to see the evidence (or lack of it!) for former coal mining. Highcliffe Road is steep and the Roughs are…well, rough, so come prepared.
Walk the valley floor, seeing monocline at meander bank and other valley bulging sites; Rough Rock exposed below Wiremill Dam; tree root fossils behind Leather Wheel; rock succession in river bed at Shepherd Wheel – junction of Millstone Grit Series and Coal Measures.
Walk up part of Highcliffe Road, past site of drift mine (1929), using maps and photos of evidence of coal mining.
Path below High Storrs field to see line of “bell pits”, to Bents Green Road
Return to Forge Dam via Ivy Cottage Lane, pointing out relief features
Tickets are free for FoPV members using the emailed discount code and £5 for non-members.
