Hello Conservation Volunteers
Déjà vu, another work morning and more fencing! This time we were back in Bingham Park with the main task to replace the temporary steel pins and white rope fencing and do some tidying up.
On arriving, the Parks team had already mowed the grass and wildflowers in all the seeded areas and were starting to take down the temporary fencing which was to be replaced on two corners.
Following on from the successful "production line" approach in Endcliffe Park last time for installing the wooden post and rope fencing the teams were assigned to their respective installation tasks. Queen Vic wasn't available this time, so the bench nearby became the drillers workbench using what has now been coined as the "Endcliffe Park Standard Measurements for FoPV fence installation" (holes at 4", 19", ground line at 36"). Hopefully the bench didn't sustain any accidental drill holes!
The post hole preparation team set off creating a pilot hole for each post at a spacing of 2.5m, followed on by the post erectors with the pre-drilled posts, and once all post were installed the two lengths of rope were threaded through and around each post and tied off at the ends.
We had previously identified a waste bin situated near to the drillers bench at the top end which would be better situated on the opposite corner, giving a better line to the fence by the bench and so was moved to its new location. As far as a waste bin goes it fits in better there.
Meanwhile another group were busy with a vital task i.e. raking up and moving the cuttings leftover from the mowing.
Elsewhere, volunteers were scraping mud from paths and tidying the edges around the fenced areas. After doing fence installation Chris S attended to some of the blocked grates, lifting the grate grill cover and digging out as much mud as was possible.
Finally, a broken post near the coffee cart was replaced which required the steel staples and ropes to be removed from several posts first - why couldn't it have been an end post!
It was a great turnout. Thank you to everybody who came along and also thanks to Andy and the Parks team for their help.
The next work morning is on Tuesday 22nd October. An email will be sent out nearer the time with details.
